SMD 9 Famous Eagle Scouts

There are lots of people who were scouts in their youth but only about 7% make it to the rank of Eagle. This inspirational Scoutmaster Dave highlights 10 of them

Three of the Eagle scouts highlighted here are astronauts. In fact, 20 of the 24 men who flew to the Moon from 1968 to 1972 were Scouts, including 11 of the 12 men who walked on the moon.

The first, is Neil Armstrong Famous for being the first man to stand on the Moon from Troop 14, Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Jim Lovell, Famous for leading the failed space mission Apollo 13 safely back to Earth and for being the only person to travel to space four times, hailed from Troop 60, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Charles Duke Jr., former astronaut, United States Air Force officer and test pilot. As Lunar Module pilot of Apollo 16 in 1972, he became the tenth and youngest person to walk on the Moon, at age 36 years and 201 days, Duke was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned its highest rank, Eagle Scout in 1946.

In politics, Gerald Ford the 38th US President was an Eagle Scout. He always regarded this as one of his proudest accomplishments, even after attaining the White House. Ford received the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in May 1970 and the Silver Buffalo Award in 1995.

Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former New York City mayor is an Eagle Scout, Class of 1954.

Presidential candidate, and founder of Electronic Data Systems Corporation Ross Perot. was also an Eagle Scout, awarded in 1942.

Another famous businessman is the founder of Walmart and self-made man, Sam Walton. Sam became the youngest Eagle Scout in the state’s history while attending eighth grade in Shelbina, Missouri. He became recipient of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award from the BSA in November 2010.

Steven Spielberg, Famous filmmaker, director, and producer is an Eagle Scout from Troop 294, Scottsdale, Arizona.

Rounding out our list is Mike Rowe, American television host and narrator, actor, best known for his work on the Discovery Channels show, Dirty Jobs. Mike also spoke at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree.
