SMD 156: Cub’s summertime scouting
For those with cubs that are new to the program, or even some older cubs, one of the great things about scouting it access to all sorts of family centric activities. These come in three varieties, your council, your pack, and your family.
The first variety is your council. Depending on how your area is structured you may sign up for these types of activities thought your pack, but in addition to the ones your pack might be promoting, there are generally some other events that are district will have. They can range from minor league baseball, soccer, and hockey games to district camping activities. These are open to parents and scouts, depending on the activity it may be a family-oriented event as well.
The next variety are pack events. While these may be promoted as pack events because you will usually attend as part of your unit, most packs will have picnics, fishing trips and other similar outings to take advantage of as a family.
And the last variety are family oriented scouting activities. Go camping with just your family, take a hike, go to a local museum.
Cub scouting is all about outdoor family activities. Summer is the time to take advantage of all the outdoor scouting activities and get your cubs excited about doing things in the outdoors. The TV and video games will always be there, the summer is the best time to build family memories with the help of some great scouting opportunities.
Take what you like and leave the rest, and as we say in Woodbadge, feedback is a gift, leave yours below in the comments, with the hope we can all learn together.
I’m Scoutmaster Dave, and this was a bit on summertime scouting.
