This special ScoutmasterDave video showcases all of the dutch oven and cast iron gear in the ScoutmasterDave arsenal. From pots, to tools to a dutch oven stand we review some great cast iron hardware.
I’m going to show you some of my Dutch oven toys today so the first one that oh yeah can I talk about is your standard little frying pan these are great for making eggs in the morning.
I have a few of these guys here they don’t weigh very much so you can actually bring it out on a camping trip without too much of trouble that would be followed by our next size is our little saucepan these large saucepans are really great holds a good amount of stuff here in comparison you can see size wise also not very big when you buy that you actually do get a little Lodge a little brush that kind of goes with that as well surprisingly when I bought it I didn’t think I used this very much but one of the things that I do use a lot is this pan right here uh this isn’t your traditional pan here but it is really good for making things like fish and braising different types of meat there uh it’s not very heavy here um but it is very wide which is good I can show you this is what it looks like over here and you could tell that it’s nice and seasoned there you can see the shininess that you got there things just slide right off of this so it’s really good can to use keeping things seasoned makes cooking with cast iron very good.
The pans that works out really well is if you’re looking for something versatile is this convertible one here it’s from Utopia kitchen and actually is two pieces it has a frying pan on top and the bottom part of it is a dutch oven pan here but the two of these together on the top of the bottom of a dutch oven so if you were new to Dutch oven cooking and you’re considering picking up a piece this is a nice piece because you can use it in multiple ways you can just use it as a pot but you can also put it together and use it as a dutch oven right there like that.
Now looking at other things on my rack over here down below is your standard Dutch oven this is your standard Dutch oven lid over here this is a uh number 10 Lodge here um this is good for a patrol size here it’s not very heavy but it can be used for patrol size here and one of the things that I do also do with these is every time that I clean out the thing to keep it from rusting you want to season it often so that you have a nice coating of oil on it but I also take a piece of paper towel and I’ll put it between the lid and the Dutch oven and that just leaves this little space over here that way air can get to it so if it just happens to be a little moist inside for some reason that you know it doesn’t rust.
Dutch oven that’s number 10. that would be followed by one of my favorite ones here which is our our big boy down on the bottom now this one’s a heavy pie now this is more of a true size one here this needs to be re-seasoned a little bit this is these uh the Boy Scout edition of this Dutch oven here also again put that there the inside is pretty good although the outside as you can kind of see over there probably too use a little scrubbing there I use this last night but this is nice and heavy the great thing about these is you can actually cook on the top of it here you can take this put it right in the coals there and you could use it like that now along with Dutch ovens there’s a lot of toys that come with Dutch ovens that help you uh with the cooking process.
So looking at a few of those toys here we have this chain mail right here now this is good for cleaning off uh stuck on debris on there and you you I generally don’t use soap on these things and then you can just scrape it away with these type of things and it doesn’t really hurt the Dutch oven as well lately I’ve been using what’s called a Scrub Daddy on these things with no soap on it it gets in there really well especially if your things are seasoned you just give it a couple of swipes and it really cleans out the Dutch oven one of the other things that you can get are these little large scrapers here as you can see it’s it’s a thick plastic coating.
I think they come in a set of three or four of these things and the great thing about these is I’ll use this as an example is it’s angled so that you can get in there and you can get right at the edges all right so you can see that and one of the things that I never go out Dutch oven cooking without out in the woods are really these great gloves this was actually a gift from another scout master there these oven mitt gloves are really great because what is odd you can pick up your dutch ovens without burning yourself in these.
These are these are hot gloves so I keep these along with my Dutch Oven stuff when I take it out and the last thing I want to show you is my little demonstration Dutch oven here uh not the most useful of things in the world but it’s really great for actually demonstrating what a dutch oven is so if you’re doing presentation to somebody this is a really great one there this you could just make a really a one-pot dessert inside of here like a Dutch apple or something like that but you know you can show what it is and how you clean and things like that without carrying around the large Dutch oven thanks but it is mostly for presentation purposes there so thank you for joining me on this little Dutch oven Journey here uh if anybody has any questions about anything Dutch oven please reach out scatmaster Dave and I would really appreciate it if you like And subscribe down on the bottom there it really helps out the program have a great day.
