Transcript:
While movies aren’t generally something you think of when you think of scouts, there are some great movies that you can show on cabin trips or camp-ins that align to scouting values and sense of adventure.
Cinderella Man. I showed this a few years back, it’s one of my favorites, and is a great example of resiliency.
National Treasure. Fun and adventure, this one we specifically chose when we went to Philadelphia.
November Sky. Until 2019 this movie was shown as part of woodbadge. It’s a moving movie about father son relationships and exploration.
Mr. Holland’s Opus. One that holds your attention, and can’t help but make you feel good in the end and bring a tear to your eye.
The Martian. Problem solving and resilience in outer space. What’s not to love about this movie. The only down side, is out of all of the movie I point out, it’s probably the one the scouts have most likely seen.
Miracle. A great hockey movie, but a great movie about struggle and overcoming.
Apollo 13. The predecessor to the Martian, Apollo 13, teached problem solving and grace under pressure.
Cool Runnings. This is a favorite to show aligned to a Klondike derby.
Field Of Dreams. One of the original feel good movies, reinforcing family.
The Karate Kid. This is one from when I was a kid, in my mind unacceptable that kids don’t get to experience it.
The Princess Bride. Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die. Classic. A must watch fun fest of adventure.
We Are Marshal. Heartbreaking true story of how football heels a town.
I hope you enjoyed this list, and include it in your scouting adventures.
Take what you like and leave the rest, and as we say in Woodbadge, feedback is a gift, leave yours below in the comments, with the hope we can all learn together.
I’m Scoutmaster Dave, and this was 12 movies to share with your scouts.
